Hi! I'm Captain Beth Layer. After years as an environmental consultant and a lifetime as an avid outdoors woman, I fell in love with saltwater flats and bay fishing. The feeling I got when I hooked into my first redfish was a rush that was instantly addicting. At that moment I realized that fishing was not just a man's sport.

I see lots of men fishing with there buddies but I have never seen girls fishing with their buddies. I also realized that the only guides I could find were men. My husband and I agreed that there must be other girls who wanted to learn to fish so I became a licensed US Coast Guard Captain and started Girls Go Fish Charters to provide saltwater fishing experiences for girls. And boy, do we have fun.

My boat is not your typical fishing boat. It is set up for girls. It has comfortable fishing chairs, a potty, a sink and plenty of room to stretch out and get some sun. We are not as hard core as the guys. Fishing is the focus but I also use my time with the girls to explain the uniqueness of the Suwannee River and its estuaries and to tour the river and surrounding creeks. It's the perfect chance for a group of friends to get away from the daily pressures of life and have some real fun. The full day trips include a snack, a decadent lunch and beverages. There are plenty of photo opportunities and we always see a wide array of wildlife.

The part I like the best is when I get to see girls who have never fished before land their first fish. I know I have done my job when I see these girls scream and yell and high five each other, just like the guys. They may not always catch the biggest fish and they may not always catch the most fish but they always catch the fishing spirit. And at the end of the day I have initiated a new bunch of girls into the sport of fishing.
